the couleur of style

Are there any rules to fashion anymore?

Out with the old, in with the new, in the with the old, nothing is out..

Being the age that I am now, I can say that I have lived in a time where we previously have been normalized to adhere to an endless set of ‘fashion rules’.

“Always match your shoes to your purse”

“Thrift store clothes are for people who can’t afford designer”

“Fall colors only include muted tones or neutrals”

“You can’t wear shorts with heels”

Granted, these were probably not the same for everyone, but you get where I’m going with this.

For some, it seemed like a maze to figure out what was considered fashionable, what’s wrong or what’s right. Especially when trying to avoid having fashion being used as an insult. “That’s so last season!”

Now, originality and creativity are celebrated more than ever and I am basking in it. Looking back at my high school days, I thought I was cool taking cues from the high fashion world and working it into my normal wear. Except, others couldn’t see my creativity and I would get occasionally asked what I was wearing because it just wasn’t the high school norm.

Thankfully, today is not the same. I know I haven’t had front row seats to the fashion of some of my favorite decades, but I feel that the current times we are in are some of the most freeing for personal style.

Monochromatic looks, dopamine brights, unusual color pairings, pastels for fall, y2k styles we thought would never come back, rewearing styles, pretty much anything goes and I love that.

Realistically, there are always going to be styles or trends that others disagree on or deem ‘out of style’ (that is until they come back in again).  What makes the difference today is applauding their expression and personal style, even if it may not align with yours.

What are some of the trends you’re happy to wear again?
